Rhialto the Marvellous surprised me because the protagonist is not as venal and self-serving as most Vance heroes. He is magnanimous to his colleagues and fair to his servants. He is a competent wizard, and he is loyal (or at least truthful and trustworthy) to Ildefonse the preceptor.
