This is a classic fall-of-civilization story, except that it is disease and not nuclear war or an asteroid that wipes out most of the world's population. Told from the viewpoint Isherwood Williams, an introspective loner who finds himself the de facto leader of all that is left of civilization, the book traces the survivors as they learn to survive in a depopulated world. I found it to be a great book, probably in the top 10 or 20 I've read (although I reserve the right to change my mind when I read it again. I've found some books merely appear great on the first reading, but reveal flaws on the second time through. I'll reread this book in 4 or 5 years and see if it passes the test of time.)
