1984 isn't a perfect book, but there is a reason it's a classic. If parts of it seem dated that's because they are, but on the whole it's still quite believable. It's a great story that illustrates how a truly autocratic society might function and survive in the long term--in contrast to governments like Communist Russia, which lasted less than a century. The only real problem I had with the book is that there are some dull bits when Orwell is carrying on about political theories. So it loses points for being dull in places, but gains points back for being one of the few books that actually made me reflect on how often I deceive myself and force myself believe things that aren't true.
