Hondo is the worst science fiction novel I've ever read. The author, Louis L'Amour, forgot about the "science" part of science fiction. What we're left with is a story set in the American West (think cowboys and Indians) without any hint of science or technology whatsoever--unless horses count as technology.
Hondo Lane is a real man's man. He evades Apaches on the warpath, meets a strong frontier woman, accidentally kills her no-good philandering gambling husband, takes the woman as his squaw, throws her son into the creek so he can learn to swim like a man, and moves them all to his ranch in California. If you've ever seen a John Wayne movie, you know all about Hondo.
